The Great Mass in C minor is considered one of the greatest works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He composed it in 1782/3 after his marriage when he moved to Vienna from Salzburg.
The work embodies pomp and solemnity and also anticipates the symphonic masses of Joseph Haydn in its solo-choral sharing. The mass shows the influence of Bach and Handel, whose music Mozart was studying at this time. In 2015, Pope Francis told reporters the "Et incarnatus est" from the large-scale work "is matchless; it lifts you to God!" |
